The Glossy abelia (Abelia x grandiflora) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small semi-evergreen tree that is a hybrid between the Abelia chinensis and the Abelia uniflora, both native to China. It was introduced into Japan in Taisho Era (about 90 years ago). This tree can reach 1-2 m in height, and used as a hedge tree. The leaves are ovate to elliptic with coarse toothed edges, and arranged in opposite. The panicles are borne at the terminal branches or axils, and the white tinged pale rose pink flowers bloom from June to October. The Japanese name is derived from the shape of the fruit, which resembles a shuttlecock, and from its overall resemblance to the "Deutzia". In Chinese, it is called "大花糯米条" (da hua nuo mi tiao).
