東南アジアから中国が原産です。わが国へは飛鳥時代に渡来し、染料植物として栽培されてきました。よく分枝して、高さは５０〜７０センチになります。葉は広披針形で互生します。葉は藍色染料の原料のほか、漢方では、解熱剤や殺菌剤としても用いられます。別名で「たであい（蓼藍）」とも呼ばれます。

英名は Indigo plant。

Indigo plant (Polygonum tinctorium) belongs to Polygonaceae (Knotweed family). It was introduced into Japan in Asuka Era (about 1400 years ago) and had been cultivated as a dyeing plant. It is an annual herb that is native to Southeast Asia and China. This herb is much branched and can reach 50-70 cm in height. The leaves are broad lanceolate and alternate. The leaves are used for the raw materials of indigo dye and herbal medicine for antipyretic and sterilization.
