 わが国の本州、東北地方南部から関東地方、中部地方に分布して
います。山地の岩礫地に生え、高さは３〜６メートルになります。近畿
地方から四国に分布する「あけぼのつつじ」の近縁種です。葉は楕
円形で枝先に５個ずつつきます。４月から５月ごろ、葉の展開前に淡
い紅色の花を咲かせます。群馬県の赤城山周辺に多いことから、別
名で「あかぎつつじ（赤城躑躅）」とも呼ばれます。
ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rhododendron pentaphyllum
var. nikoense。英名はありません。
'Aka-yashio' (Rhododendron pentaphyllum var. nikoense) belongs to
Ericaceae (Azalea family). It is a deciduous small tree that is native to
Honshu of Japan; southward from southern Tohoku district to Kanto and
Chubu district. This tree occurs in montane rocks and screes and can reach
3-6 m in height. The leaves are elliptic and arranged in increments of five at
the terminal branches. The pale rose-pink flowers appear in April through
May before foliation.
