メキシコが原産です。高さは５０〜１００センチになり、長卵形の葉は長さが１０〜２０センチあり対生します。また表面には葉脈に沿って白くて太い条斑があります。茎頂に穂状花序をだし、規則正しく重なった四稜形の苞に、朱橙色の花を咲かせます。

キツネノマゴ科アフェランドラ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Aphelandra aurantiaca。英名は Fiery spike。

The Fiery spike (Aphelandra aurantiaca) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Acanthus family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to Mexico. It grows 50 to 100 cm tall, and its long ovate leaves are 10 to 20 cm long and grow in opposite pairs. The surface of the leaves has thick white stripes along the veins. Spikelets are produced at the top of the stem, and vermilion-orange flowers are borne on regularly overlapping four-lobed bracts.
