ヨーロッパの地中海沿岸が原産です。塊茎から鏃形の葉をだして、高さは３０〜４５センチになります。葉には葉脈に沿って、白い斑が入ります。４月から５月ごろ、淡黄白色の大きな仏炎苞を咲かせます。夏になると地上部の葉は枯れて休眠し、「まむしぐさ」のようなオレンジ色の果実をつけます。根茎は食用になりますが、乾燥させたり茹でたりしなければなりません。

サトイモ科アルム属の多年草で、学名は Arum italicum。英名は Italian arum。

Italian arum (Arum italicum) belongs to the Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean Basin in Europe. This herb bear arrow-shaped leaves from the tuberous root, and it can reach 40-45 cm in height. The leaves have white patchs outlining the veins. The large pale yellowish white spathe bloom from April to May. The terrestrials are blighted and diapause in summer. The orange fruits resemble to "Mamushi-gusa" (Arisaema serratum). The tuberous root can be used as food after drying and boiling.
