アメリカの南西部、コロラド州からテキサス州西部にかけて、それにメキシコ北部に分布しています。ふつうは分枝して、マウンドを形成します。茎は卵形から円筒状で、淡緑色、５〜１２稜があり高さは４０センチほどになります。朱赤色の花を茎頂に咲かせます。

サボテン科エキノケレウス属の蝦サボテンで、学名は Echinocereus coccineus（syn. Echinocereus octacanthus）。英名は Scarlet hedgehog cactus。

The scarlet hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus coccineus) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is an evergreen succulent perennial that is distributed southward from Colorado to west Texas in the United States and northern Mexico. This cactus usually branched and forming mounds. The stem is ovoid to cylindrical, light green with 5-12 ribs and to 40 cm in height. The flowers are scarlet and borne on the stem tips.
