ヨーロッパの中部から南東部、中央アジアに分布しています。乾燥した草地に生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で濃緑色、縁には鋸歯があります。７月から８月ごろ、球状の散形花序をだし、青色の花を咲かせます。花序の周りには、青緑色の苞葉がつきます。和名では「まつかさあざみ（松笠薊）」と呼ばれます。

セリ科ヒゴタイサイコ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Eryngium planum。英名は Flat sea holly。

The Flat sea holly (Eryngium planum) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to central and southeast Europe, and Central Asia. This herb grows in arid grasslands and can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are dark green and oblong with toothed edges. The round umbels are borne and bloom blue flowers from July to August. The clusters are surrounded by bluish-green bracts. It is called "Matsukasa-azami" (pine-cone thistle) in Japanese.
