Rauwolfia serpentina

The Indian snakeroot (Rauwolfia serpentina) belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from India to the Malay Peninsula and Java. It grows in tropical rainforests and is about 60 cm tall. The leaves are elliptic, opposite or in whorled. Cymose inflorescences are produced in the leaf axils at the ends of reddish peduncles, and produce white to pale pink tubular flowers. The fruit is a berry that ripens black. In India, the rhizome has been used as a folk medicine for snake bites. Today, it is used as a raw material for the antihypertensive drug reserpine and the anti-arrhythmic drug ajmaline.
