 
 北アメリカ東部の「バージニアいちご（F. virginiana）」と南北アメリカ西
部の「チリいちご（F. chiloensis）」の自然交雑種をもとに改良された園
芸品種です。わが国へは江戸時代の末にオランダ人によって伝えら
れ、「オランダいちご」と呼ばれました。葉は倒卵形の三出複葉で、全
体に縮れた毛を密生します。根元からランナーを長く伸ばして繁殖し
ます。４月から５月ごろ白い花を咲かせ、果実は赤く熟します。食用
にされるのは、花托の発達した部分です。
バラ科オランダイチゴ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Fragaria
grandiflora。英名は Strawberry, Garden strawberry。
Strawberry belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is an perennial herb
that is cultivars breeded from natural crossing species between Virginia
strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) and Chile strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis).
This herb was introduced into Japan by Dutchmen in the last days of Edo
Era (about 250 years ago). The leaves are 3-lobed compounds and the
leaflets are obovate, covered with curly hairs. This herb extends the runners
from the base and reproduces itself. The white flowers come in April to
May and the fruits ripen red. The thalamus is swollen and edible.
