メキシコから中央アメリカが原産です。林のなかや林縁に生え、高さは２メートル以上になります。茎は堅くてまばらに分枝し、長楕円形の葉は濃い緑色でつやがあり対生します。夏の終わりから冬にかけて、枝先や葉腋に円錐花序をつけ、鮮やかな赤色の管状花をいっぱいに咲かせます。繁殖力が旺盛で、わが国でも種子島などでは野性化しているそうです。 |

キツネノマゴ科オドントネマ属の多年草で、学名は Odontonema strictum。英名は Firespike。 |

Firespike (Odontonema strictum) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Acanthus family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Mexico to Central America. This herb grows in woods or outskirts of woods and can reach up to 2 m in height. Stems are stiff and branch sparsely. Leaves are oblong, glossy dark green and opposite. Bright red flowers come on termial and axilary panicles. Firespike is fertile, and naturalized in the Tanegashima Island of Japan. |
