 熱帯アメリカや西インド諸島が原産です。高さは１．８～４．５メートル
ほどになり、葉は２回羽状複葉です。枝には鋭いとげがあります。温
度さえあれば周年、枝先の長い円錐花序に赤橙色の花を咲かせま
す。赤い雄しべが突きだしていて目立ちます。蒴果や根は染料とし
て、また全草が薬用にも利用されます。バルバドスの国花です。
ジャケツイバラ科ホウオウボク属の常緑低木で、学名は Poinciana
pulcherrima。英名は Dwarf poinciana, Peacock flower。
Dwarf poinciana belongs to Caesalpiniaceae family. It is an evergreen small
tree that is native to tropical America and West Indies. This tree can reach
1.8-4.5 m in height. The leaves are bipinnate compound and the branches
have acute spines. The red-orange flowers in the terminal long panicles
come in year round if the temperature keeps comfortable. The red stamens
protrude from corallas and are highly visible. The capsules and roots are
used for dye, and the whole plants are used for medicine. This is a national
flower of Barbados.
