アフリカおよび南アメリカの熱帯地方が原産です。わが国へは江戸時代の後期に渡来しました。茎はよく分枝して、高さは30〜40センチになります。葉は卵形で浅い鋸歯があり対生します。7月から9月ごろ、管状花だけの卵形の花を咲かせます。葉には「さんしょう(山椒)」のような風味があり、香辛料として利用されます。 
キク科オランダセンニチ属の多年草で、学名は Spilanthes acmella (syn. Acmella oleracea)。英名は Toothache plant。 
The toothache plant (Spilanthes acmella) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the tropical areas of Africa and South America. It was introduced into Japan in the latter term of Edo Era (about 200 years ago). The stem is much branched, and can reach 30-40 cm in height. The leaves are ovate with low toothed edges, and arranged in opposite. The ovate flowers bloom from July to September. The collora consists entirely of tubular flowers. Its leaves have Japanese pepper tree like flavor, and used as a spice.
