わが国の本州から九州に分布する「まだけ（真竹）」の変種です。桿は高さ２〜５メートル、直径５センチほどになります。桿は黄褐色で、部分的に緑色の縦条が入ります。葉は披針形で、ときおり白い条がでるのが特徴です。

イネ科マダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Phyllostachys bambusoides var. holochyryse。英名は Golden bamboo。

The golden bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides var. holochyryse) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a varity of the giant timber bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides) which is distributed to Honshu and Kyushu of Japan. The culms are 2-5 m in height and about 5 cm in diameter. The culms are yellowish brown and have partially green longitudial stripes. The leaves are lanceolate and defined by these occasional white stripes.
