The Western gorse (Ulex gallii) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native from western Great Britain to Ireland. It is closely related to Ulex europaeus. This shrub grows in heath where the gusty wind blows from the Atlantic Ocean, and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are linear-lanceolate and look like spines. It blooms yellow papilionacenous flowers from July to October, though Ulex europaeus bloom in spring. The branches contain combustible oil, they often spontaneously combust and cause of the forest fires. The forest fire is also called "Gorse fine" in Ireland. This shrub lives with Bell heather (Erica cinerea), and they color the heath.
