Larix occidentalis

北アメリカの西部に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは30〜60メートルになります。樹冠は狭い円錐形です。若い樹皮は灰褐色で、後に黄色から赤褐色になり、深く割れ目ができます。葉は春、黄緑色ですが、秋には黄金色に黄葉します。球果は未熟なときは赤色ですが、成熟すると褐色になり、鱗片は水平または反り返って種子を放出します。種子はいくつかの鳥、とりわけ「まつのきひわ(Carduelis pinus)」や「べにひわ(Carduelis flammea)」、「なきいすか(Loxia leucoptera)」などの重要な餌です。
マツ科カラマツ属の落葉高木で、学名は Larix occidentalis。英名は Western larch。
The western larch (Larix occidentalis) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to western North America. This tree grows in mountains and it can reach 30-60 m in height. The crown is narrow conic. The young bark is gray-brown, later becominig yellow to reddish brown and deep furrows. The leaves are yellow-green in spring turning golden yellow in fall. It is monoecious. The cones are red when immature, turning brown and the scales opening flat or reflexed to release the seeds when mature. The seeds are an important food for some birds, notably Pine Siskin, Redpoll and Two-barred Crossbill.
