アメリカの南西部からメキシコに分布しています。寿命の短い多年草で、日当たりがよく乾燥した土地に生え、高さは３０センチほどになります。葉や茎は銀色を帯びた灰緑色で、こんもりとしたかたちになります。「ひなぎく（雛菊）」に似た鮮黄色の頭花を、長いあいだ咲かせます。家畜には有毒ですが、ほかの飼料となる植物が枯渇したときには食べるそうです。

キク科バイレヤ属の多年草で、学名は Baileya multiradiata。英名は Desert baileya、Desert marigold。

The Desert baileya (Baileya multiradiata) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the southwestern United States to Mexico. It is a short-lived perennial herb that grows in sunny, dry areas and grows to a height of about 30 cm. The leaves and stems are gray-green with silvery tints and grow into a dense mass. It produces long-lasting, bright yellow flower-heads with a head similar to "Daisy". It is poisonous to livestock, but they eat it when other forage plants are depleted.
