Aegle marmelos

インドから東南アジアに分布しています。林内に生え、高さは8メートルほどになります。葉は披針形から楕円形で互生し、枝には長い棘が生えます。葉腋から総状花序をだし、緑白色の花を咲かせます。果実は倒卵形で黄色く熟し、生食されるほかジュースやマーマレードなどにも利用されます。またインドのヒンズー教徒のあいだでは、聖なる木とされています。 
ミカン科アエグレ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Aegle marmelos。英名は Bael tree、Bengal quince。 
The Bael tree (Aegle marmelos) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distributed from India to Southeast Asia. It grows in forests and can reach a height of about 8 m. The leaves are lanceolate to elliptic and alternate, and the branches have long spines. Inflorescences are produced from the leaf axils and produce greenish-white flowers. The fruits are obovate and ripen to yellow, and are eaten raw or made into juice or marmalade. It is also considered a sacred tree among Hindus in India.
