メキシコ南部が原産です。中央アメリカでも広く栽培されています。海岸沿いの低地に生え、成長が早く、高さは10メートルほどになります。葉は長楕円形で互生し、明確な葉脈と腺点および斑があります。花は壺形で、淡いクリーム色をしています。果実は直径6〜12センチほどあり、表面は熟しても緑色です。収穫後、1週間ほど追熟させると、表面は黒褐色に、また果肉はチョコレートプディングのような風味になり、食用にされます。別名で「ブラックサポテ」とも呼ばれます。 
カキノキ科カキノキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Diospyros digyna。英名は Black persimmon、Black sapote、Chocolate pudding fruit。 
The black persimon (Diospyros digyna) belongs to Ebenaceae (the Ebony family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to south Mexico. This tree is culivated widely in Central America. This tree occurs in the coastal lowlands, growing fast and can reach about 10 m in height. Leaves are oblong, alternate with distinct veins, glandular dots and spots. Flowers are bell-shaped and pale cream. Fruits are 6-12 cm in diameter, still green when ripen. These are force-riped for a week, then the surface turn to blackish brown and the pulp will savors chocolate pudding. Fruits are edible and also called "Balck sapote".
