 中国原産の「まぼけ」系統の園芸品種です。わが国へは平安時代に
渡来し、江戸時代から広く栽培されるようになりました。高さは２〜３
メートルほどになります。葉は楕円形から長楕円形で互生し、縁には
鋭い鋸歯があります。３月から４月ごろ、緋赤色やピンク色、白色な
どの花を咲かせます。名前は「木瓜（もっけ）」が訛ったものともいわ
れています。
バラ科ボケ属の落葉低木で、学名は Chaenomeles speciosa。
英名は Japanese quince, Flowering quince。
Japanese quince belongs to the Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small
deciduous tree that the host species native to China. This tree is a cultivar
of Chinese quince (Chaenomeles cathayensis). Japanese quince was
indroduced into Japan in Heian Era (1,200 years ago), and started to
cultivate widely from Edo Era (400 years ago). It can reach 2-3 m in
height. Leaves are elliptic to oblong and alternate with acute dentate edges.
Scarlet or pink, white flowers come from March to April.
