Pyrus fauriei

Pyrus fauriei

The Fauriei pear (Pyrus fauriei) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to the Korean Peninsula. The tree is pyramidal or shrubby, 7 to 8 m tall, and produces white flowers around April. It produces small fruits (1 to 2 cm in diameter) in the fall, which resemble those of the "Mame-nashi" (Pyrus calleryana). It is named after Father Urbain Jean Faurie, a French priest who collected plants while doing missionary work. It is also known as the "朝鮮豆梨" in Japan.
