The Fony baobab (Adansonia fony) belongs to the family Bombacaceae. It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed in the western and southern parts of Madagascar. It is the smallest of the baobabs, usually 4 to 5 m tall. The trunk is enlarged and sake bottle shaped, with a distinct constriction under the branches. The leaves are deciduous in the dry season. The flowers are bright yellow to orange-yellow and are day flowers. Fruits are used for food and seasonings. The individual in the photo is estimated to be 70 years old and is the first flowering tree in Japan. Incidentally, the baobab (Adansonia digitata) is depicted as the giant tree that destroys the stars in Saint Exupery's "The Prince of the Stars".
