 
 中国からヒマラヤ、ヨーロッパ南部にかけて分布しています。わが国
へは明治時代に渡来しました。高さは４〜５メートルになります。葉は
卵形で対生し、枝先に輪生状につきます。６月から７月ごろ、枝先の
花序に小さな黄緑色の花を咲かせます。花後、花柄が糸状に伸びて
長い毛のように枝先を被います。和名は、ヤク（白熊）の尻尾の毛を
束ねてつくられた仏具の払子に似ていることから。別名で「スモーク
ツリー」とも呼ばれます。
ウルシ科ハグマノキ属の落葉低木で、学名は Cotinus coggygria。
英名は Smoke tree。
Smoke tree belongs to Anacardiaceae (Sumac family). It is a deciduous
small tree that is native to China, Himalaya and southern Europe. It was
introduced into Japan in Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). This tree can
reach 4-5 m in height. The leaves are ovate, opposite and crowed at the
terminal twigs. The clusters are borne and bloom small yellowish green
flowers from June to July. The peduncles grow in filaments and cover the
clusters after flowering.
