 ヨーロッパのアルプスやバルカン半島の北西部に分布しています。
冷涼な気候の森の中や林縁に生え、高さは２０〜４０センチになりま
す。ヘレボルス属の中では早咲きで、イギリスではクリスマスの時期
に咲くことから、「クリスマスローズ」の名前がつけられました。またキ
リスト生誕の日に、ベツレヘムはこの花で広く被われていたといわれ
ます。写真下は園芸品種で、本種とステルニイ種（H. x sternii）を交雑
した「サンマーブル（cv. Sunmarble）」。
キンポウゲ科ヘレボルス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Helleborus
niger。英名は Christmas rose。
Christmas rose belongs to Ranunculaceae (Buttercup family). It is an
evergreen perennial herb that is distributed in Alps to northwest Balkan
Peninsula. This herb occurs in cool forests and forest edges, and can reach
20-40 cm in height. It is called Christmas rose which bloom at Christmas
time in England. According to legend, Bethlehem hill was said to be covered
with them at Jesus' birthday. The bottom photo is a cultivar 'Sunmarble'
which intercrossing between H. x sternii.
