わが国の本州、静岡県以西の太平洋側から瀬戸内海側、それに四国東部や九州の北部と南部に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは3メートルほどになります。葉は長さ5〜10センチの倒卵形から長楕円形で互生します。新葉には長い絹毛が多く見られます。雌雄別株で、4月ごろ、小さな黄色い花を咲かせます。ひとつの花序に3〜5個の花しかつきません。果実は液果で、9月から10月ごろに黒色に熟します。 
クスノキ科クロモジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Lindera lancea。英名はありません。 
"Hime-kuromoji" (Lindera lancea) belongs to Lauraceae (the Laurel family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from the Pacific Ocean side west of Shizuoka Prefecture to the Seto Inland Sea side of Honshu, and in eastern Shikoku and the northern and southern parts of Kyushu in Japan. It grows in mountainous areas and grows to a height of about 3 m. The leaves are 5 to 10 cm long, obovate to oblong, and alternate. The new leaves have many long silky hairs. It is dioecious and produces small yellow flowers around April. There are only 3 to 5 flowers per inflorescence. The fruits are berries that ripens to black from September to October.
