西インド諸島が原産です。今では熱帯の各地に帰化して広がっています。高さは３０〜５０センチほどになり、葉は披針形から倒披針形で互生します。３月から１０月ごろ、茎の上部に白色の花を咲かせます。花冠の先端は５裂して平開し、花筒の長さは５〜１０センチあります。全草にアルカロイドが含まれ、切り口などからでた乳汁に触れると炎症を起こします。和名では「ほしあざみ（星薊）」と呼ばれます。

キキョウ科ヒッポブロマ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Hippobroma longiflora（syn. Isotoma longiflora）。英名は Star of Bethlehem。

The Star of Bethlehem ( Hippobroma longiflora) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the West Indies. It is now naturalized and spread throughout the tropics. White flowers bloom at the top of the stem from March to October. The corolla is flattened with five lobes at the tip, and the flower tube is 5 to 10 cm long. The entire plant contains alkaloids, which cause inflammation if the plant comes into contact with milk from a cut or other source. It is called "Hoshi-azami" (star thistle) in Japanese.
