西アジアや北アメリカが原産です。冷涼な気候を好み、わが国では長野県や東北地方を中心に栽培されています。雌雄異株ですが、栽培されているのはほとんどが雌株です。ビールの原料としては、雌株につく未受精のまつかさに似た花（毬花）を、８月から９月に収穫して使われます。古代から薬用植物としても利用されてきました。

アサ科カラハナソウ属の多年草で、学名は Humulus lupulus。英名は Common hop。

The common hop (Humulus lupulus) belongs to Cannabaceae (the Hemp family). It is a perennial herb that is native to western Asia and North America. This herb prefers cool environment and grows on a trailing vine. It is dioecious. The seed-vessels of the female plants have been used for adding to beer and herbal medicine from the ancient days.
