南アメリカのアンデス地方が原産です。わが国へも１９８０年ごろに導入されました。高さは１メートルほどになり、茎に小さな棘があります。葉は長楕円形から卵状披針形で、軟毛が生えています。４月から５月ごろ、集散花序に青紫色の花を咲かせます。果実は卵形で、「メロン」のような風味があります。

ナス科ナス属の常緑小低木で、学名は Solanum muricatum。英名は Pepino、Melon pear。

The Pepino (Solanum muricatum) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to the Andes region of South America. It was introduced to Japan around 1980. It grows to about 1 m in height and has small spines on its stem. The leaves are oblong to ovate-lanceolate with soft hairs. The blue-purple flowers bloom in cymose from April to May. The fruit is ovote and has a "melon" flavor.
