アメリカの東部から中南部、メリーランド州からフロリダ州、テキサス州に分布しています。河川沿いや湿地などに生え、高さは６メートルほどになります。樹皮は淡褐色から灰色で平滑です。葉はさじ形から狭い倒卵形で互生し、ほとんど枝先に集まってつきます。雌雄異株で、春に小さな白い花を咲かせます。果実は核果で、秋に赤く熟します。

モチノキ科モチノキ属の落葉低木で、学名は Ilex decidua。英名は Possumhaw、Winterberry。

The possumhaw (Ilex decidua) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to the eastern and central-southern United States; from Maryland to Florida and Texas. This tree grows along streams and in swamps, and up to a height of about 6 m. The bark is pale brown to gray and smooth. The leaves are spatulate to narrow obovate and gather almost at the tip of the branch. It is dioecious. The small white flowers bloom in spring. The fruits are drupes and ripen red in fall.
