南アメリカのパナマからギアナ、ブラジルにかけてが原産です。現在では、熱帯各地に帰化しています。熱帯雨林の周辺部に群生し、高さは３０〜４５センチになります。わが国へは明治時代の中頃に渡来し、「にしきいも（錦芋）」と呼ばれていました。葉は小さな「さといも」のかたちをしていて、いろいろな斑模様があります。

サトイモ科カラジウム属の多年草で、学名は Caladium bicolor。英名は Fancy-leafed caladium。

The fancy-leaved caladium (Caladium bicolor) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South America; from Panama to Guiana and Brazil. Nowadays, it is naturalized widely in the tropical latitudes. This herb grows gregariously at the periphery of tropical forests, and can reach 30-45 cm in height. It was introduced into Japan in the middle days of Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). The leaves are small, aroid-like with various mottles.
