北アメリカの太平洋岸、カナダのブリティッシュコロンビア州からアメリカのカリフォルニア州、アイダホ州に分布しています。湿り気のある草原や斜面に生え、高さは９０〜１２０センチになります。葉は細長く、４月から５月ごろ、茎の先の総状花序に、紫色から白色の花をつぎつぎに咲かせます。花冠は星のようなかたちをしています。写真中２〜４・下は、園芸品種の「セミプレナ（cv. Semiplena）」。

ユリ科カマシア属の多年草で、学名は Camassia leichtlinii。英名は Large camas。

The Large camas (Camassia leichtlinii) belongs to Lilaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed along the Pacific coast of North America, from British Columbia in Canada to California and Idaho in the United States. It grows in moist meadows and on slopes and grows 90 to 120 cm tall. The leaves are long and slender, and purple to white flowers bloom one after another in racemes at the end of the stem from April to May. The corolla is star-shaped. Photos 3rd-5th and below show the horticultural variety 'Semiplena'.
