The Natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa) belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to northern South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal privince. This tree is much-branched and can reach up to 6 m in height. The leaves are dark glossy green, ovate and arranged in opposite. The flowers are white, star-shaped, waxy and bloom almost all year long. The fruits are red berries, edible and taste like sweet cranberries. Many dwarf cultivars have been bred. It is called "Oobana-carissa" in Japanese.
