東南アジアが原産だと考えられています。現在では世界の熱帯地域に広く植栽され、生活に欠かすことのできない有用植物となっています。高さは10〜20メートルになり、葉は大きな羽状複葉で、幹の先端にまとまってつきます。果実は楕円形でココナッツと呼ばれ、未熟な胚乳はココナッツジュースやココナッツミルクとして飲料にされます。また熟したものはココナッツクリームとして料理やお菓子の材料にされます。これを乾燥させたものはコプラと呼ばれ、ヤシ油やマーガリン、石けんなどの原料となります。 
ヤシ科ココヤシ属の常緑高木で、学名は Cocos nucifera。英名は Coconut palm、Coco palm。 
Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is probably native to Southeast Asia. This tree has been cultivated in the tropical areas worldwidely and becoming to essential useful plant. This tree can reach 10-20 m in height, the leaves are large pinnate compound and fascicled on the terminal stem. Fruits are elliptic, called coconut, and the young albumens are used for beverages such as coconut juice or coconut milk. Ripened albumens are ingredients of coconut cream. Dried alubmens, called copra, are ingredients of palm oil, margarine or soap.
