マレー半島が原産です。偽茎は２〜２．５メートルになります。葉は広線形で、１．５〜２メートルの長さになります。茎頂から花序を下垂させ、両性花を咲かせます。果実は円柱形で、黄白色から桃黄色になり、弓状に曲がります。果実は生食されるほか、アルコールや果実酒などに加工されます。

バショウ科バショウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Musa x sapientum (syn. Musa x paradisiaca)。英名は Banana。

Banana (Musa x sapientum) belongs to the Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the Malay Peninsula. The pseudostem can reach 2-2.5 m in height. The leaves are broad linear and 1.5-2 m long. The drooping cluster is borne on the pseudostem apices and bloom bisexual flowers. The fruits are columnar, yellowish-white to pinkish-yellow and arched. They are used for raw diet and the the raw material for alcohol or fruit wine.
