東南アジアのタイからマレー半島に分布しています。地上茎はなく、地下茎から大きな楕円形の葉をだします。葉にはクリーム色の斑が入ります。高さは15〜30センチになり、夏に花茎を伸ばして、淡紫色の花を咲かせます。属名は、17世紀のドイツの植物学者、エンゲルベルト・ケンペル(Engelbert Kaempfer)に因みます。 
ショウガ科バンウコン属の多年草で、学名は Kaempheria pulchra。英名は Peacock ginger、Resurrection lily。 
The Peacock ginger (Kaempheria pulchra) belongs to Zingerberaceae (the Ginger family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed in Southeast Asia from Thailand to the Malay Peninsula. It has no above-ground stem and produces large elliptic leaves from an underground stem. The leaves are mottled with cream-colored spots. It grows to a height of 15 to 30 cm and produces light purple flowers on scapes in summer. The genus is named after Engelbert Kaempfer, a 17th century German botanist.
