カナダのノバ・スコシア半島（Nova Scotia Peninsula）からアメリカのロッキー山脈以東のテキサス州にかけて自生しています。わが国には、明治末期に導入されました。数個の花を、茎の上から下向きに咲かせます。花弁のように見えるのは萼片で、濃赤色から黄色を帯びた赤色をしています。写真は園芸品種の「ナナ（cv. Nana）」。

キンポウゲ科オダマキ属の多年草で、学名は Aquilegia canadensis。英名は Wild columbine。

The Wild columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native from the Nova Scotia Peninsula in Canada to Texas, east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. It was introduced to Japan at the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912). It produces several flowers that bloom downward from the top of the stem. The sepals, which look like petals, are dark red to yellowish red in color. The photos show the garden variety 'Nana'.
