アメリカのテキサス州からメキシコが原産です。高さは45センチ以上になります。葉は細長い長楕円形で対生し、長い毛が生えます。7月から10月ころ、直径2センチほどの球状花序に、橙色から紅色の花を咲かせます。花弁に見えるのは、紙質の総苞片です。園芸品種の「ストロベリーフィールド」が、よく知られています。
ヒユ科センニチコウ属の多年草で、学名は Gomphrena haageana。英名は Globe amaranth。
The globe amaranth (Gomphrena haageana) belongs to Amaranthaceae (the Amaranth family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Texas in the United States and Mexico. This herb can reach up to 45 cm in height. The leaves are narrow oblong and opposite with long hairs. The orange to rose-pink flowers bloom in spherical flowerheads about 2 cm across from July to October. They are papery, petal-shaped involcal bracts. The most common cultivar is known as "Strawberry Fields" globe amaranth.
