 
 西アジアからヨーロッパが原産です。わが国へは明治時代に渡来し
ました。いまでは各地に帰化しています。水辺や湿地に生えて、高さ
は６０〜１００センチほどになります。５月から６月ごろ、花茎の先に
鮮やかな黄色い花を咲かせます。一日花です。外花被片にはひげ
状の突起がなく垂れ下がって咲き、基部には褐色の条が入るのが特
徴です。「はなしょうぶ（I. kaempferi）」にもっとも近縁です。
アヤメ科アヤメ属の多年草で、学名は Iris pseudoacorus。
英名は Yellow flag。
Yellow flag belongs to Iridaceae (Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is
native from West Asia to Europe. This herb was introduced into Japan in
Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). It is naturalized in so many places. It
occurs in water's edges or marshes and can reach 60-100 cm in height.
The bright yellow flowers come on the flowering stalks from May to June.
The flower lasts about one day. The outer tepals are drooping. They have
not cristate projections and have brown stripes at the bases. Yellow flag is
closely related to Japanese water iris (I. kaempferi).
