"Kishu-mikan" was a representative citrus fruit in Japan, until the introduction of "Unshu mikan" (Citrus unshiu) in the Meiji era. The fruit is small and is also called "Komikan". It is also famous as a mikan that Kinokuniya Bunzaemon sent this fruit to Edo in the stomy sea in the middle of Edo period (about 260 years ago). Its cultivation in Wakayama Prefecture is said to date back to the Azuchi Momoyama period (about 430 years ago). "Kishu-mikan" is pushed by "Unshu mikan" and its production is decreasing, but the main production area is Wakayama Prefecture and is also grown in Kagoshima Prefecture even now.
