わが国の各地をはじめ、世界中の寒帯や温帯に分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の日当たりの良い場所に生え、高さは２０〜６０センチになります。茎は細く叢生し、葉は線形です。７月から８月ごろ、長い花茎の先に円錐花序を出し、分枝した細い花序に、紫褐色を帯びた小穂をまばらにつけます。

イネ科コメススキ属の多年草で、学名は Deschampsia flexuosa。英名は Crinkled hairgrass、Wavy hairgrass。

The crinkled hairgrass (Deschampsia flexuosa) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native all over Japan, as well as widely the frozen latitudes and temperate areas. This grass grows in sub-alpine to alpine, sunny places and it can reach 20-60 cm in height. The slender stems are clumping and the leaves are linear. It produce the panicles atop of long flowering stalks from July to August. The purplish-brown spikelets are borne sparsely at the branched slender clusters.
