 わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島や中国に分布してい
ます。山麓の湿地などに生え、高さは２メートルほどになります。葉は
倒卵状長楕円形で対生し、先端が尾状に尖ります。鋸歯は先端に近
い上半分にしかありません。７月から８月ごろ、葉腋のすこし上から
集散花序をだし、淡紅色の小さな花を咲かせます。果実は１０月から
１１月ごろ、球形で光沢のある紫色に熟します。名前は「むらさきし
きぶ」に比べて、全体に小型なことから。別名の「こしきぶ（小式部）」
は平安の女流歌人、小式部内侍に因みます。
クマツヅラ科ムラサキシキブ属の落葉低木で、学名は Callicarpa
dichotoma。英名は Purple beautyberry。
Purple beautyberry (Callicarpa dichotoma) belongs to Verbenaceae (the
Verbena family). It is a decidous small tree that is distributed from Honshu
to Shikoku and Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows
in piedmont marshes and can reach about 2 m in height. The leaves are
obovate-oblong and opposite with caudal tips. They are serrated at the
upper half. The cymes are borne on nearby axils and bloom pale pink
flowers from July to August. The fruits are round and ripen in glossy purple
from October to November.
