The Spice lily (Manfreda maculosa) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from southern Texas in the United States to Mexico. It grows 30-60 cm tall and has a rosette of sword-shaped leaves. The leaves are thick and fleshy with purple-brown patches and finely serrated edges. From May to July, it produces racemes of pale green to purplish-brown flowers. The red filaments protruding from the corolla are conspicuous.
