わが国の各地をはじめ、サハリンや東シベリアに分布しています。深山に生え、巻きひげで他の樹木や岩に絡みついてよじ登ります。葉は卵心形で薄く、葉縁には不規則な鋸歯があり先端は長く尖ります。両性花をつける株と、雄花のみをつける株があります。8月から9月ごろ、両性花は帯黄白色で葉腋に1個だけ咲き、雄花は白色で先端が5裂し、総状花序に咲きます。花後、果実は約1センチの淡緑色でつやのある卵形の液果になります。 
ウリ科ミヤマニガウリ属の一年草で、学名は Schizopepon bryoniaefolius。英名はありません。 
"Miyama-niga-uri" (Schizopepon bryoniaefolius) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual herb that is native to Japan, as well as Sakhalin and East Siberia. This herb grows in deep mountains, and climbs up adjascent trees and rocks by tendrils. The leaves are ovate-cordate, thin, irregular serrated with long acute tips. There are bisexual plants and male plants. The bisexual plant blooms solitary yellow-white flower in the axils, the male plant blooms white flowers which having five partite tips in the racemes from August to September. After flowering, it produces pale green, about 1 cm across, burnish ovate berries.
