わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに朝鮮半島や中国東北部、ロシアの極東地方、カムチャッカ半島に分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の湿地に生え、高さは１５〜４０センチになります。茎は円形で、下部に紫褐色の鞘状葉がつきます。７月から８月ごろ、茎頂に花序をだし、濃褐色の花を咲かせます。苞は直立し、長さ１〜２センチです。別名で「たてやまい（立山藺）」とも呼ばれます。

イグサ科イグサ属の多年草で、学名は Juncus beringensis。英名はありません。

"Miyama-i" (Juncus beringensis) belongs to Juncaceae (the Rush family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, Russian Far East and the Kamchatska Peninsula. This herb grows in subalpine to alpine marshes and can reach 15-40 cm in height. The stem is round with purplish-brown varginal leaves at the underpart. The cluster is borne on the stem apices and blooms dark brown flowers from July to August. The bract is erect and 1-2 cm long.
