わが国の本州、近畿地方以西から島根県それに四国に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは１０センチほどになります。葉は卵円形から卵状楕円形で、基部は心形です。葉の表面には雲紋があります。４月ごろ、根元に暗紫褐色の花を咲かせます。萼筒は半球形で、口部は著しく括れます。

ウマノスズクサ科カンアオイ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heterotropa asper (syn. Asarum )。英名はありません。

"Miyako-aoi" (Heterotropa asper) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed westward from Kinki-district to Shimane prefecture of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan. This herb grows in montane forests and can reach about 10 cm in height. The leaves are ovate-round to ovate-elliptic with heart-shaped bases. They have cloudlike mottles on the surface. The dark purplish brown flowers come on the bases in April. The calyx tube is hemispheroidal and curve eminently at the tips.
