ニューギニアが原産です。蔓性の潅木でよじ登り、２０メートルにもなります。３個の小葉は卵形で短い葉柄があり、先端が尖ります。長く伸びた枝の葉腋に総状花序をつけ、オウムのくちばしのような花をいっぱいに下垂します。花は朱色や赤色、緋色などがあります。わが国の植物園では、本種がよく植栽されています。

マメ科トビカズラ属の常緑蔓性木本で、学名は Mucuna bennettii。英名は New Guinea creeper、Parrot's beak。

The New Guinea creeper (Mucuna bennettii) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an evergreen woody vine that is native to New Guinea. This shrub is a climbing vine and can reach about 20 m long. The leaves are 3-lobed compounds and the leaflets are ovate, short petiolated with acute tips. The racemes are borne at the terminal branches and bloom parrot beak-like flowers. The flower colors are vermillion, red or scarlet. This species is often cultivated in the Japanese botanical gardens.
