ユーラシア大陸およびアフリカ北部が原産です。北アメリカにも広く帰化しています。わが国へは牧草として導入され、今では各地に野生化しています。道端などに生え、高さは５０センチほどになります。５月から６月ごろ、円錐花序を茎頂にだし、小穂をつけます。別名で「ケンタッキーブルーグラス」と呼ばれ、芝生としても利用されています。

イネ科ナガハグサ属の多年草で、学名は Poa pratensis。英名は Kentucky bluegrass。

The Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial grass that is native to the Eurasia and northern Africa. It is naturalized widely in North America. This herb was introduced into Japan as a meadow grass and naturalized in so many places nowadays. It grows on roadsides and can reach about 50 cm in height. The panicles are borned on the stem apices and bloom the flowers from April to June.
