中国の浙江省が原産です。山地の林内に生え、高さは１〜３メートルになります。葉は長楕円形で、対生します。５月から６月ごろ、枝先にクリーム色と黄色の半八重の花を咲かせます。現在は、絶滅危惧種に指定されています。中国語では「夏蝋梅（xia la mei）」と呼ばれます。

ロウバイ科ナツロウバイ属の落葉低木で、学名は Sinocalycanthus chinensis (syn. Calycanthus chinensis)。英名は Chinese sweetshrub。

The Chinese sweetshrub (Sinocalycanthus chinensis) belongs to Chimonanthus (the Wintersweet family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Zhejiang in China. This tree grows in montane woodlands and can reach 1-3 m in height. The leaves are oblong and alternate. The cream and yellow semi-double flowers appear on the terminal twigs from May to June. Currently, it is designated as an endangered species. In Chinese, it is called "夏蝋梅" (xia la mei).
