ヨーロッパの東部、コーカサス地方からリトアニア北東部、ポーランドに分布しています。現在では、イギリス諸島の一部に帰化しています。高原の草地や針葉樹林などに生え、高さは3〜4メートルになります。葉は長楕円形で、両面には疎らに毛が生えます。5月ごろ、枝先に芳香のある黄色い花を咲かせます。花冠は5深裂し、雄しべは5個あります。和名では「きばなつつじ(黄花躑躅)」と呼ばれます。 
ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rhododendron luteum(syn. Rhododendron flavum)。英名は Yellow azalea、Pontic azalea。 
The yellow azalea (Rhododendron luteum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to eastern Europe, from the Caucasus to northeastern Lithuania and Poland. Nowadays, it is naturalized to the part of British Islands. This tree grows in upland grasslands and coniferous forests, and it can reach 3-4 m in height. The leaves are oblong and bear sparsely hair on the both sides. The fragrant yellow flowers bloom at the top branches in May. The corolla is quintuple-partite and has five stamens.
