アメリカ西部のカリフォルニア州南部からバハカリフォルニア・スル州に分布しています。海岸沿いの乾燥した斜面に生え、高さは５メートルほどになります。葉は厚く革質で、披針形から卵形です。葉には「にがへんとう（苦扁桃）」に似た芳香があります。晩春から初夏にかけて、よく分枝した花序に小さな白色の花を咲かせます。カリフォルニアでは観賞用として植栽されています。

ウルシ科ウルシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Rhus laurina。英名は Laurel sumac。

The laurel sumac (Rhus laurina) belongs to Anacardiaceae (the Sumac family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to southern California in the United States and Baja California Sur in Mexico. This tree grows in coastal dry slopes and can reach about 5 m in height. The leaves are thick, leathery and lanceolate to ovate. They have odor of bitter almonds. The tiny white flowers come in the many-branched clusters in late spring and early summer. This tree is planted as an ornamental in California.
