 
 大西洋東部のカナリー、マデイラ、カボベルデの各諸島に分布して
います。乾燥した潅木地帯に生え、高さは１２メートルほどになりま
す。成長がことに遅く、その反面、数千年も生き続けるという長寿植
物です。枝先の花序に黄白色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。ギリシャ
神話神話では、ヘラクレスまたはアトラスによって殺された、百の頭
をもつドラゴンから流れ出た血から生まれた樹とされています。また
幹を傷つけると出る樹液は赤くて、民間薬や呪術用に使われたそう
です。
リュウゼツラン科リュウケツジュ属の常緑小高木で、学名は
Dracaena draco。英名は Dragon tree。
Dragon tree belongs to Agavaceae (Agave family). It is an evergreen semi-
tall tree that is distributed in Canary Islands, Madeira Islands and Cape
Verde Islands, eastern Pacific Ocean. This tree occurs in arid mallees and
can reach about 12 m in height. This tree grows very slowly, though it
keeps alive for several thousand years. Numerous yellowish white flowers
come on the terminal inflorescences. In the Greek myth, Landon's red
blood (the hundred-headed dragon which was killed by either Hercules or
Atlas) flowed out upon the land and from it sprung up the trees. The red
sap was used for folk medicine or magic rituals.
